HISTORY/DESCRIPTION: “THE GOSPEL OF JESUS’ WIFE” IS A PAPYRUS FRAGMENT, WTH COPTIC TEXT, THAT INCLUDES THE WORDS, “JESUS SAID TO THEM, ‘MY WIFE…”. THE TEXT RECEIVED WIDESPREAD ATTENTION WHEN FIRST PUBLICIZED IN 2012 FOR THE IMPLICATION THAT SOME EARLY CHRISTIANS BELIEVED THAT JESUS WAS MARRIED. THE FRAGMENT WAS PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR KAREN L. KING, HOLLIS PROFESSOR OF DIVINITY AT HARVARD DIVINITY SCHOOL, AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF COPTIC STUDIES IN ROME, ON SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2012. PROFESSOR KING SUGGESTED THAT THE PAPYRUS CONTAINED A FOURTH-CENTURY COPTIC TRANSLATION OF “A GOSPEL PROBABLY WRITTEN IN GREEK, IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE SECOND CENTURY.”
