Illuminated around 1500 by the artist Jean Poyer
This Book of Hours contains Calendar, Gospel Lessons, Hours of the Virgin, Hours of the Cross, Hours of the Holy Spirit, Penitential Psalms with Litany, Office of the Dead, and Suffrages—as well as a number of common accessory prayers. Based on the frequency and variety of added devotions, it appears that scribes included these for owners who wished to personalize their prayer books. This manuscript is a guide on how to devote yourself to prayer. It was illuminated for the purpose of teaching all people, even those who could not read. Each folio is hand painted with the most vibrant blue, green and red grisaille.
One illuminations found in this text, one of the first depictions of how to process wine. Folio 5r shows men and women both laboring to make wine before the long winters. In the background, seated women pick the grapes, while men wait with a full basket to bring indoors.
Inside the barn men dump their baskets into large wine presses where the fruit is stomped. Crushed grapes are then transferred to a large barrel for the liquid to be extracted for storing and aging in the nearby barrels. Astounding depictions of Religious events. For example, Folio 134v shows a rich man dying and landing into the flames of hell for his mishandling of power. This gruesome scene is bizarre and demonic. Reading through these text you will find demon casting and hand paintings of humans being tortured.
