Description: This limited edition facsimile is a faithful reproduction of a 13th-century missal, handcrafted in Latin in Salzburg, Austria around 1265. The missal features an incredible font and contemporary Paduan painting, and was likely commissioned by the monastery at Seitenstetten following a devastating fire. Archbishop Ladislaus, who studied at Padua University and had connections there, may have played a role in its commissioning. The missal contains instructions and texts necessary for the celebration of Mass throughout the liturgical year, and includes an intricate border on folio 30v that was hand-drawn to keep the script lined up and neatly arranged. While some of the images are undone, they are outlined in a common red, later to be colored in with more vibrant worldly colors. The missal offers a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices of the past and is a valuable addition to our understanding of medieval art and culture. The diptych of the Virgin and Child with a facing Crucifixion in the manuscript was likely created by one of the manuscript's three local artists and shows firsthand knowledge of contemporary Paduan painting, facilitated by the archbishop's connections. The donor at the foot of the Virgin is believed to be the abbot of Seitenstetten, and the missal is a rare and precious artifact that will be treasured by historians, art lovers, and anyone interested in the cultural and religious history of the past.
